The Gift of Education
"Sometimes it's hard to feel we can make a meaningful difference. Yet, there are always opportunities to make the world a better place and I feel a responsibility to do what I can. A solid education was a gift from my own parents and I am confident that time in a classroom prepares everyone to grow, to participate fully in society, and to access further opportunities. I love the fact that ACC is a self-help program directed by the communities themselves with virtually no administrative costs. Thanks for providing me an avenue to help kids and communities that I might otherwise have never known about. Together, we change lives and make a brighter future."
-Scott Cabalka, St. Paul, MN.
Travel that is part of the solution
Join Africa Classroom Connection and Books For Africa for a unique, adventure-filled, deeply personal trip to South Africa this August and September. Two tour groups will repeat the same itinerary Aug 8-25 or Aug 30-Sept 16. A significant portion of your trip cost funds our classroom construction efforts in South Africa. (Tour costs go up on May 1st, so register now for the best value!)
On last year's Learning Tour, our travelers visited Hhoye Secondary School, situated in Jozini. The school has 4 temporary classrooms that serve grades 8-10. Each classroom has 72 learners. The school is supposed to run from grades 8-12, but due to the shortage of space they don't. Most of the learners don't continue with school because there is no high school in the area. As a Learning Tour participant, you'll not only see and understand the challenges that face learners like those at Hhoye Secondary. You'll also be part of the solution by helping to fund a classroom at a school like this where just a little more space makes all the difference in kids' chances to complete their high school education.
Learning Tours include on-site visits to schools in rural KwaZulu-Natal and
libraries provided by Books For Africa, as well as time in Johannesburg to learn more about South African apartheid history, and of course several days on safari to see elephants and lions. Learn more at an information meeting Thursday 4/25 at 7:00pm Central Time. Click here to register.
Let the Learning Begin!
This is a classroom nearing completion at Gobihlahla School that will be ready for our Learners soon! It's one of five being constructed at this site with $66,500 of your donations sent out at the end of last year to our partners in South Africa, Eshowe Community Action Group. The Learners will now have a safe and dry place to continue with their education. Thank you for your continued support!
Lunch with the Ambassador
On May 16th we have the privilege of hosting a private lunch with Ebrahim Rasool (pictured right), the South African Ambassador to the United States. A small group of ACC supporters will have the opportunity to join in a discussion with one of South Africa's leading global representatives. Attendance is limited, but we welcome your interest. For more information, please contact us.
Our 2012 Annual Report, now available on our website, provides an overview of last year's key successes. We're proud of what we've accomplished with your help!
Thank you for your care for school kids so far away. They know!
